  • Make Acute and Critical Care Nursing Your Priority

As president of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, I am proud to champion the profession I love. I am passionate about acute and critical care nursing practice, and I want you to be, too.

My presidential theme for the year is “Reclaiming Our Priorities.” I believe it is applicable to career choices, whether you are just starting out or an experienced nurse who wants to take advantage of new opportunities. If you remember what led you to nursing in the first place, you will find the priority within that will guide your journey to the place in healthcare that suits you best.

Of course, acute and critical care nursing is not for everyone. It is a challenging and demanding specialty, but also a rewarding one. Acute and critical care nurses are privileged to care for patients and patients’ families at the most vulnerable times of their lives.

Regardless of your role—at the bedside, in advanced practice, as a nurse manager, in academia—you will find many options in acute and critical care nursing. I urge you to take the time to explore and seriously consider which ones might be right for you. Seek out an acute or critical care nurse in your area. Most will be eager to share their passion for not only nursing, but also the specialty they have chosen.

You can also gain insight within the pages of this AACN Critical Care Careers 2008 publication. Read on to find out about the abundance of career opportunities that await you.
