Purpose: The role of the Nurse Practitioner in Cardiology is pivotal in improving outcomes. Heart disease remains the number 1 killer in the United States. A nurse practitioner driven team approach is critical in maximizing patient care.

Description: The ACC guidelines were reviewed and applied to care of the percutaneous coronary intervention and electrophysiology patients. Preventive screening, secondary prevention guidelines, and assessment and intervention for antiarrythmic therapy were maximized. An interdisciplinary approach with physicians, nursing, cardiac rehab, pharmacy assistance, smoking cessation, social workers, case managers, and diabetes educators enhanced care. A focus on accurate admission and discharge medications were included in a detailed discharge summary.

Evaluation and Outcomes: An indirect cost savings occurred by facilitating early morning discharges and decreasing length of stay as well as reducing complications. The cardiology nurse practitioner is utilized to offset reduced resident work hours and provides an alternative to patient care without the need for residents and protects education on the conventional teaching services.
