Purpose: The purpose of this project was to promote continuing excellence in critical care nursing by increasing the number of CCRN certified Registered Nurses in New York- Presbyterian Hospital, Weil Cornell Medical Center, NY, NY. The NYPH, Weil Cornell Medical Center is comprised of the Coronary Care Unit( CCU), Cardiothoracic Intensive Car Unit( CTICU), Medical Intensive Care Unit( MICU), Neurological Intensive Care Unit( NICU), Surgical Intensive Care Unit( SICU), Burn Unit, and Progressive Care Unit ( PCU).
Description: Prior ton to commencing the project, we calculated the number of CCRN in the Units. The data showed the CCU had 7%, MICU, 3%, CITCU 13%, and PCU had 0%. Nurses were recruited to join AACN, CCRN review course was organized – presented by an outside speaker, In services were conducted to increase nurses’ awareness on the importance and benefits of being CCRN certified, Poster presentation done during Nurses week regarding CCRN certification, including eligibility requirements and resources available for preparation. Nursing Skills Day was organized , where nurses participated, demonstrating Swan Ganz Cath. Set-up, Pacemaker, and IABP management ,Journal club was formed where articles of interest ( those pertaining to acute/critical care nursing) are reviewed/discussed and critique, Nurses were encouraged to take CCRN practice exam questions (installed in 4 south learning computer).Nurses were encouraged to utilize computer-based interactive software, paid by the hospital, installed in the unit leaning computer. Content consists of clinically-based scenarios covering wide range of nursing/critical care topics such as cardiovascular, Respiratory, Neurological, and Endocrine. We shared Professional updates/news through meetings, in-services, postings on the unit, and by word of mouth to those nurses who expressed interest in certification and/or AACN membership.
AACN weekly news letter was shared with the nurses to keep them abreast of AACN initiatives and to increase their enthusiasm in critical care nursing and certification. Personal accounts were created for those nurses interested in accessing free educational CEUs online. Cram review sessions were formed for those nurses preparing to sit for CCRN certification. Names of CCRN holders were prominently displayed on the unit. There are ongoing efforts through presentation of critical care topics, utilizing the exam blueprints by CCRN holders to increase number of CCRNs not only on our unit but in other critical care units as well.
Evaluation/Outcome: Our purpose was achieved, the number of CCRN Certified nurses has more than doubled in the CCU and there have been substantial increase in the other units. Many nurses are actively studying for the CCRN Certification. More initiatives are being implemented such as refund for CCRN review course and Examination fees by the hospital and increase of CEU days from three to five days per year, CCRN Review courses, group study sessions, in-services to progressive care units regarding PCCN Certification. We are encouraging more nurses to be CCRN certified. Our goal is to have more than 50% of the nurses in all the critical care units CCRN Certified by the end of 2007.
